This work has been partly financed by the Directorate General of Regional and Urb an Policy, European Commission.
The European Settlement Map 2016 (also referred as 'EUGHSL2016') represents percentage of built-up area coverage per spatial unit using 2012 satellite images.
The GHSL method uses machine learning techniques in order to understand systematic relations between morphological and textural (pantex) features, extracted from the multispectral and panchromatic (if available) bands, describing the human settlement. |

The European Settlement Map 2016 is based on statistical probability, reporting presence of built-up coverage per spatial unit from remotely-sensed data. The method was developed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The resulting map does not reflect the opinion of the European Commission on formal or informal settlements, or in any other way. While every effort has been made to make the GHSL method reliable, the information is purely indicative and should not be used for any decision-making without additional sources and analysis. The European Commission is not responsible for any impact, damage or loss resulting from the use of the information presented in this map. |
